Ladies First

Ladies First’ is a show that will be opening THIS Friday the 21st of May at Brunswick Street Gallery in Melbourne. I am really excited to see this show for a couple of reasons. First of all, I have volunteered at this gallery a few times and have had the pleasure of getting to witness what goes on behind the scenes and met a couple of artists here and there. As you can probably guess, I decided to do this so I could get some experience for our own show coming up. (I can’t believe it’s 3 weeks away!) Tessa Yee, the curator, is very talented and always puts together a great show. According to the Indie Art and Design website, she wanted to bring together works exploring ideas of femininity - through portraits of beautiful women, flirty girls, cute and kooky illustrations. Tessa chose artists who each have a really unique style, and there will be a contrast between extremely feminine, fariytale-like images, and more twisted, mischievous, images of femininity.

Second of all, Megan Dell is one of the 14 girls in the show. I went to her last exhibition opening at No Vacancy Gallery, and I also attended her session called ‘artist talk’. Here I found out heaps of cool stuff about her life and art. She does a lot of awesome stencil work, one line drawings and paints on skateboards. I look forward to seeing what she puts in this show. On the right are some of her works and to find out more about her, this is her website:  www.megandell.com.

    Just To Annoy You!

    Issue NO. 10 - YOU

The theme for Issue NO. 10 is YOU!!

    That’s right, anything about yourself.

We welcome everyone to contribute to our very special tenth edition. To celebrate, we are having an exhibition, a collaboration of artwork from prominent members of the Melbourne underground art community. This exhibition will showcase the diverse talents of a group of artists, musing on themes of identity and individuality, while contributing to a greater whole, a central tenant of the ‘JTAY’ philosophy.

The premise of ‘Just To Annoy You’ is to provide support for emerging artists and act as a creative outlet for the expression of ideas. We wish to supply a greater viewing opportunity for the wider community and the chance for interaction with original works. We hope it serves as an interactive, educational introduction into the thriving zine culture of Melbourne.

Final Contribution Date - 14th May
